Gerberga was married (c769) to Carloman II of Neustria
Her sister Gepurga of Lombardy was married to Charles I the Great (Charlemagne) at the same time
With her husband’s death Gerberga fled to the court of her father in Pavia, taking her infant sons with her
Pope Hadrian I refused Desiderius’ request that he crown Gerberga’s elder son Pepin as King of the Franks
The queen was forced to surrender to Charles after the siege of Verona (774)
Gerberga and her sons were confined to monasteries for the rest of their lives
