Gepurga of Lombardy
Carolingian queen consort (769 – 770)
Born (c752) – Died (c776) at the Abbey of Corbie
Probably buried at the Abbey of Corbie
Father – Desiderius of Lombardy
Mother – Ansa Verissima
Gepurga became the second wife (769) of Charles I the Great (Charlemagne)
Her sister Gerberga of Lombardy was married to his younger brother Carloman II. Charles divorced Gepurga after only eighteen months of marriage. The union had been a political alliance arranged by his mother. There were no children. Queen Gepurga retired to her father’s court in Pavia. She was captured there by Charles with her parents. The former queen was forced to become a nun at the Abbey of Corbie with her mother.
NOTE :
Gepurga has previous been incorrectly identified as ‘Desiderata’ or ‘Desiderata of Lombardy.’
This was due to a miscopying of the term desideriata filiam (desired daughter) from the Monumenta Germaniae Historica.
