His parentage remains unknown
He was deposed by Charlemagne (June 5, 774) who captured Desiderius, his wife and several daughters after the successful siege of Pavia. He was forced to become a monk, and Queen Ansa forced to become a nun at the Abbey of Corbie with one of their daughters.
