Himiltrude of Austrasia
Carolingian queen consort (768 – 769)
Born (c747) – Died (c790) at Nivelles in Brabant
Buried at the Abbey of St Gertrude at Nivelles

Father (probably) – Bernard of Austrasia (link)
Mother (probably) – Gisela of Laon

Himiltrude was perhaps the daughter of Bernard of Austrasia and thus the granddaughter in the illegitimate line of Charles Martel
If this identification is correct then her mother was Gisela of Laon, Bernard’s first wife
Other possibilities for Himiltrude’s father include Carloman I or Grimpert I of Paris, though as her son Pepin left a son named Bernard it would seem that Himiltrude being a
granddaughter of Charles Martel is more likely. She was therefore her husband’s first cousin
Himiltrude became the first wife (c761) of Charles I the Great (Charlemagne)
Queen Himiltrude was repudiated (769) so Charles could make a more important dynastic marriage with Gepurga of Lombardy
She retired to the Abbey of St Gertrude at Nivelles and was forced to become a nun
