Emperor Louis III
King of Provence and Italy (890 – 928) and Holy Roman Emperor (901 – 905)
Nicknamed ‘L’Aveugle’ or ‘Beronides’ (the Blind)

He was elected Holy Roman Emperor (901) in succession to Emperor Arnulf
Louis was later deposed by his kinsman Berengar I of Friuli (905) who then assumed the Imperial title
Berengar caused Louis III to be blinded at Verona (905)
Louis was thereafter known as King of Provence only (905 – 928) with his capital at Arles

King Louis was married (c898) to Adelaide of Bliesgau

NOTE 1 :
The assertion that Louis was married firstly (c900) to the Byzantine princess Anna, daughter of Emperor Leo VI (886 – 912) has now been debunked as fiction. A betrothal may certainly have been arranged but no marriage is recorded in the sources nor is there any record of Anna as empress and queen consort.

NOTE 2 :
The assertion that Louis was married thirdly (c924) to Edgiva of England, daughter of Edward the Elder has now been disproved. Queen Edgiva appears as character in the novel Avalon (1966) by British author Anya Seton. This has only added to the genealogical confusion. Actually no such lady can be definitely attested from any sources, either Anglo-Saxon or from the Continent.
