Gisela (Gisla) was the younger sister of Charles I the Great (Charlemagne) and Carloman II of Neustria
As a young girl she was betrothed firstly to the Byzantine emperor Leo IV but this match was broken. She was betrothed secondly to Adelgis of Lombardy, the son of King Desiderius but this match was broken by Charles. A possible marriage for Gisela with Bishop Wenilo of Laon remains speculative. Gisela was appointed by Charles to be the Abbess of St Marie at Chelles (788)
