Edith was considered as heiress to the throne until the birth of her half-brother Edward (962). She never married and became a nun (c973) with her mother at Wilton Abbey. With the murder of her half-brother Edward the Martyr some nobles and magnates wished Edith to become queen but she refused. Her half-brother Aethelred II appointed Edith as Abbess of Wilton (c980).
