Carloman of Neustria (3)
Carolingian prince
Born (849) – Died (876) probably at Abbey of Echternach, Luxemburg
Father – Charles II the Bald
Mother – Ermentrude of Orleans
He remained unmarried and was the Abbot of St Medard at Soissons (866 – 874)
Carloman was arrested at Attigny (June 18, 870) because of rebellion against his father. He was deprived of his religious offices and was briefly imprisoned at Senlis before his father allowed his release (Oct). The prince managed to escape from his father’s custody at Lyons but was soon recaptured. He was later sentenced to death (873) for his crimes by an ecclesiastical court but by public consent this was commuted to blinding, and the sentence was duly carried out. Carloman was then imprisoned within the Abbey of Corbie but managed to escape with help and fled to his uncle Louis the German of Bavaria. King Louis however, was shocked by Carloman’s crimes and conspiracies and had him placed within the Abbey of St Alban at Mainz. He was probably transferred to the Abbey of Echternach shortly prior to his death.
