Bertha was married (c785) to Rodoald of Hornbach
Her husband Rodoald is most probably the famous ‘Roland’ of legend
Described as the Emperor Charlemagne’s nephew, he was actually nephew by marriage
Bertha was left a widow when her children were young (c798). She never remarried and devoted her life to religious observances
Bertha and her son Rupert are usually known respectively as ‘of Bingen’ after the family castle
Bertha survived Rupert for twenty-five years and was buried with him when she died
Usually referred to as St Bertha of Bingen she was venerated on the same day as Rupert (May 15)
